Boozing with the Dig
“The prospect of drinking with Lauren Clark, booze journalist and walking alcohol encyclopedia, is daunting.”
So begins an article in the latest Weekly Dig. It’s part of a twice-per-year feature called 5 Drink Minimum, where the Dig sends its writers out to report as much as they can remember of a long evening at a local bar. This year, some of the writers paired up with various, um, industry professionals at the bar of the latter’s choice. That’s how I wound up drinking at Deep Ellum with News Editor Cara Bayles. We had a bang-up time, and I have to say she did a nice job with the piece considering what her notebook looked like at the end of the night.

Not to curry favor with our blog Mistress, but in reading the whole Dig feature this AM, I thought that the piece with Ms. Clark a bit fared better than the rest. Don’t get me wrong, overall it was neat idea, I just thought it needed a bit of tightening in the concept. Part of what i liked about Cara Bayles piece was that there was a bit more of a sense of the person she was with and their take on the bar and the drinks than some of the others.
I’d love to see a similar piece with perhaps just one or two writers (too, too many voices in the Dig piece), taking several evenings each with different, very key local bar/cocktail/scene personalities and really REALLY discussing each drink in theories historical, technical, and philosophical. I’d love to get more of a sense of the bar, the interviewee, and the drinks than I did from the pieces as they stand now. Maybe that’s just the cocktailian-nerd in me.
Still, overall, a very fun feature from the Dig and very worth my time!

Curry away, Scortch!
I think Cara did a nice job, too. Thanks for reading and commenting.
