My somewhat dated (about 9-10 years ago, things change) understanding is that drinking is a real triple whammy when it comes to weight gain. One, as you note it is pretty dense in terms of Kcals. Two, alcohol causes hormones like estrogen to increase which in turn causes the body to more preferentially push energy to fat production. And the third whammy being that your body's first priority when drinking is to process alcohol over other food, which also causes a lot of the food energy to be more likely to be converted to fat.

Throw in the drunk food/fourth meal effect, of which I have a very bad habit with, and it can become a real problem, particularly as we age and our base metabolism slows down. Hell, throw in the hangover helper meals the next day, those typically aren't all that low cal either :)

Ha! Good point, John. Adam, I'm guessing that, calorie-wise, the Zombie is the cocktail equivalent of the Baconator.

I wonder which version of the Zombie has the fewest calories? I'm hoping it's the 1934 version.

No doubt drinking results in weight gain, but on the plus side if you drink enough you won't care. And there is nothing more fun than a hard workout to beat back a hangover. So it all balances out in the end. Cheers!

I don't worry so much about the calories in the cocktails I drink, it's how I eat when I'm drinking (and worse, afterward) that's the danger. I cooked up a fourth meal of the day after tipping back a few the other night, a lovely plate of spaghetti with garlic, EVOO, and dried chili that I most certainly did not need, though I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sober, I would likely have gone to bed without it.
