Krystl, thanks! I love getting these updates from people in the know. I didn't even think about the rat factor. Ick. So cool that your GGF played a part in SF history. Thanks for reading.

Actually there are many many tunnels in SF. I was born and raised in North Beach where tunnels run abroad, and yes most are closed off due to RATS. hmmm.......not nice, but in China Town they remain open.
My GGF used to run a few barrels through, all the ancetors did. What a crazy time, and very dealy.A facination to us however. Thanks for this great site ! I read daily.

Ahh, the Tonga Room... brings back memories of kitsch nights with friends. Thanks for the reviews- I'll be sure to pass them on the SF locals!

No prob, Mod Betty. Alex, thanks for confirming what our bartender at the HOS suspected. There's just gotta be a secret passage somewhere, though, right?

I've been down in the tunnels underneath House of Shields (changing kegs for my lazy friends:) and unfortunately they no longer run very far as they've been blocked off. Probably so people like me don't go running about like mole people.
