Max of Deep Ellum has an interesting variation of the Marconi Wireless using apple jack, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, orange bitters, and a sugar cube which somewhat parallels Adam's modifications above.

Also of note is John of No.9 Park's Marconi Wireless where he used Lairds Bonded {!} instead of their apple jack.

And one more comment on this drink: I mixed a Marconi Wireless last night using a slightly old bottle of M&R vermouth, and found the taste to be a bit on the flat side. So I changed the recipe a bit:

2 oz applejack
1/2 oz sweet vermouth
1/4 oz grenadine (homemade)
orange bitters

The grenadine really made the drink pop and helped bring out some more of the fruity notes from the applejack. The vermouth still provided a bit of depth and backbone, but not as in your face as the normal amount. Also, the color is really nice! Perhaps it's no longer a Marconi Wireless, but give it a try anyway :)

I agree -- he certainly didn't seem effusive in his praise for the drink :-)

Great job during the spot! You look very comfortable on camera.

I'll definitely be mixing up some Marconi Wirelesses (what is the correct plural form??) this Thursday with some of the 7 1/2 year old Laird's brandy, which should be in my hands by then. Perhaps a splash or two to fortify the gravy for the turkey, as well; I usually use cognac, but I think the apple brandy might work, and it would be more in line with the gravy of our forefathers (maybe).

The funny thing was, he said he liked the drink after taping was finished. And before we started, he said he mixed a mean Old Fashioned.

hmmmm

Does anyone think that when Chet said "interesting" after he tasted a Marconi Wireless, he was wondering where all of the olive juice was?
